A Chinese ship ran aground near Thitu Island in the disputed South China Sea due to bad weather. Filipino troops responded but the ship was later freed. Tensions remain high as such incidents happen amid ongoing maritime disputes between China and the Philippines.
Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Armand Balilo said that the Chinese vessel was not immediately noticed by the patrol vessel of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
This comes a few days after China's alleged reclamation activities in features of the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea, parts of which Manila terms as the West Philippine Sea.
