He said having a fool-proof integrated air and missile defence system in the form of Golden Dome for the continental United States is a fantasy given "hypersonics and other technology".
"Russia has been seeking diplomatic resolutions to contradictions and conflicts as long as there is the slimmest hope of success. Those who convinced themselves that Russia can be spoken to in the language of force are fully responsible for those missed opportunities," Putin said.
Addressing an award ceremony for weapons developers in the Kremlin, Putin was cited by TASS as saying that the speed of the next generation of nuclear-powered cruise missiles will be "more than three times the speed of sound, and in the future, they will even become hypersonic."
During the programme "Year in Review with Vladimir Putin," hosted by Channel One, a Russian state-controlled television channel, the Russia President proposed a "technological duel" to demonstrate the missile's capabilities.
In a televised address on November 21 evening, Putin said that there are currently "no countermeasures for the Oreshnik missile" and assured that Russia will issue notifications before using this type of missile, state media reported.
