From the mud below the wetlands of Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP), has emerged a story of how residence of the one horned Rhino has evolved through climate change, vegetation shifts, exotic species invasion, and herbivore activity.
The sanctuary, well-known as the home of the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in India, has seen the arrival of these birds since early November, drawing both domestic and international tourists.
According to sanctuary authorities, 10 out of 17 anti-poaching camps inside the 16 sq km protected area have been inundated, severely affecting forest operations and forcing wildlife, including the iconic species, to move to higher ground.
The Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam's Morigaon district has emerged as a model of successful rhino conservation, boasting the highest density of one-horned rhinoceroses in India and recording zero poaching incidents for the past 11 years.
"It is notified for general information and best interest of all concerned that Jeep Safari for the visitors in Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve will remain closed from 19th May, 2025, due to inclement weather and road conditions," the notice read.
The Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve authorities have targeted the kitchens of 233 anti-poaching camps and providing improved cooking stoves and community kitchens to protect the health of field forest staff who guard the one horned rhino habitat.
The six-day survey's primary objective was to explore ways to secure the growing population of one-horned rhinos that have strayed onto the river island from Kaziranga National Park.
During the awareness program, the importance of wetlands and their protection for a sustainable future was emphasized, aiming to instil a sense of responsibility among young students.
The Laokhowa and Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries (LBWLS) provide vital riverine habitat for the greater one-horned rhinoceros and act as buffer zones for the Kaziranga Tiger Reserve.
The World Rhino Day celebration was held on Sunday at Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, featuring a series of outreach activities aimed at raising public awareness about rhino conservation.
As the world is celebrating 'World Rhino Day', Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling his visit to Kaziranga National Park in Assam, said that it is a matter of pride that India is home to a large number of one-horned rhinos. He urged people to visit the place as well.
