Announcing the cabinet decisions, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the state cabinet has approved the GoM report on the proposal to grant ST status to six major communities of the state, namely Tai Ahom, Chutia, Moran, Motok, Koch-Rajbongshi, and Tea Tribes (Adivasis).

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday welcomed the Central government's decision to conduct a caste census, stating that the move was made under pressure.
The meeting held in Lucknow was attended by energy ministers of Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, besides senior officials from central government, state governments, state power utilities, Power Finance Corporation (PFC) Ltd and REC Ltd.
In a landmark meeting, they passed a unanimous resolution urging the Group of Ministers (GoM) to abandon its proposal to modify Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates in the garment sector and retain the existing structure of 5 per cent and 12 per cent.
The ten-member Group of Ministers (GoM) panel, headed by the Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, met on Wednesday on the ongoing compensation cess issue. The meeting discussed the future of cess to states under the GST regime but no decision was taken says the minister.
"We have told them that they will look into this matter and come up with a report by the end of October 2024. The #GST Council which will meet in November, will finalise based on this report which will come from the GoM," she added.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that a job fair is planned to be organised in Bengaluru in the last week of January and a group of ministers will work to effectively organise this event.
