Washington D.C. [USA], Dec 24 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Sunday expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in Indonesia due to a tsunami, that hit beaches around country's Sunda Strait yesterday night.
A volcano-triggered tsunami has so far claimed at least 222 lives and left 834 injured , an official from Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency (NDMA) said on Sunday.
Trump tweeted, "Unthinkable devastation from the tsunami disaster in Indonesia. More than two hundred dead and nearly a thousand injured or unaccounted for. We are praying for recovery and healing. America is with you!"
The Agency also noted that 28 people have gone missing. The rescue operations are underway.
The calamity has caused massive damage to the infrastructure as well.
The department further informed that the tsunami was in all likelihood caused by a combination of underwater landslides in the aftermath of the volcanic eruption in Sunda Strait, some 156-km west of Indonesian capital of Jakarta.
The archipelago nation of Indonesia is situated in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. (ANI)
