Washington D.C. [USA], Feb 23 (ANI): The meeting between US President Donald Trump and China's Vice Premier Liu He is underway in Washington, with China committing to buy an additional 10 million metric tons of US soybeans during the Oval office meet.
Officials on both sides have indicated that a trade deal - which would put an end to the bilateral trade war - is a likely outcome of Friday's Oval Office meeting.
"BREAKING: In Oval Office meeting today, the Chinese committed to buying an additional 10 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans. Hats off to @POTUS for bringing China to the table. Strategy is working. Show of good faith by the Chinese. Also indications of more good news to come," Sonny Perdue, the Secretary of the US Department of Agriculture, tweeted on Friday (local time).
The previous round of talks took place in Beijing last week.
It is important for these talks to reach certain agreements as the truce period of 90 days, mutually decided by Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, is about to end on March 1.
Trump had previously threatened to raise tariffs on the USD 200 billion of Chinese products from 10 per cent to 25 per cent after the lapse of the truce. However, on Tuesday, Trump suggested that he might extend the March 1 deadline citing that the talks are going "very well". (ANI)
