Trump calls Sri Lankan PM to voice solidarity after Sunday's attacks

Washington [US], Apr 23 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Monday called Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to voice his solidarity with the island nation as it deals with the aftermath of the ghastly terror attacks which have claimed lives of 300 people and left many injured.  
"Spoke to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka this morning to inform him that the United States stands by him and his country in the fight against terrorism. Also expressed condolences on behalf of myself and the People of the United States!," Trump said in a tweet.

Earlier in the day, Trump termed the attacks on Easter Sunday as "unthinkable". "We are working with Sri Lanka, but that’s a terrible thing," CNN quoted the US President as saying. 
"President Trump pledged United States support to Sri Lanka in bringing the perpetrators to justice, and the leaders re-affirmed their commitment to the fight against global terrorism," White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said in a statement.
Wickremesinghe updated Trump on the progress of the investigation into the attacks, Gidley added.
Among the dead, four were Americans, reported Washington Times, while "several others" are severely injured.  
Sri Lankan government has blamed a local Islamist terror group known as National Thowheeth Jama-ath for the explosions. 
Sri Lanka's military spokesman Sumith Atapattu said that authorities believe six suicide bombers carried out these attacks.
Investigations are currently underway into the explosions. Furthermore, at the request of Sri Lankan authorities, Interpol will be deploying an Incident Response Team to help with the investigations.
"As the Sri Lankan authorities investigate these horrific attacks, Interpol will continue to provide whatever support is necessary," CNN quoted Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock as saying in a statement.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed a three-member committee to look into the series of explosions which targeted churches and hotels on Easter Sunday. (ANI)
