New York [USA], May 3 (ANI): Facebook on Thursday removed several prominent far-right and ant-Semitic figures including Louis Farrakhan and Alex Jones from its platforms.
Jones, who is a right-wing conspiracy theorist, was previously banned from Facebook in August 2018. However, he and his media outlet InfoWars maintained a presence on Instagram, a platform owned by Facebook.
Other people banned on Thursday included Paul Nehlen, an anti-Semite who unsuccessfully ran for Congress in 2016 and 2018, and fringe right-wing media personalities Laura Loomer, Milo Yiannopoulos and Paul Joseph Watson.
"We've always banned individuals or organizations that promote or engage in violence and hate, regardless of ideology," CNN quoted a Facebook spokesperson as saying. "The process for evaluating potential violators is extensive and it is what led us to our decision to remove these accounts today."
The social networking service takes several factors into consideration before designating an individual as "dangerous".
The factors include whether the person or organisation has ever: called for violence against individuals based on race, ethnicity, or national origin; been identified with a hateful ideology; used hate speech or slurs in their about section on their social media profiles; have had pages or groups removed from Facebook for violating hate speech rules.
Facebook has often been criticised for its loopholes that allow racism to thrive on its platforms. However, the company has recently expressed willingness to take a stronger stance against white nationalism and white supremacy, in particular.
In March, Facebook said it would begin banning posts, photos and other content that reference white nationalism and white separatism, The Washington Post reported. (ANI)

Pakistan spends $980 million on Pulse imports

Pakistan spends $980 million on Pulse imports

Rana Muhammad Tayyib, President of the Punjab Pulses Importers Association and Chairman of the Grain Market, stated that before 1998, Pakistan was among the top exporters of pulses. However, the export ban introduced during the Musharraf period discouraged growers, as pulses turned into a low-profit crop. He further noted that the country's yearly consumption demand is about 1.62 million tons, out of which nearly 1.07 million tons are brought in through imports. This, he said, reflects the weak performance of the Federal Seed Corporation, which has not succeeded in developing heat-tolerant and resilient pulse seed varieties, according to TET.
