Washington DC [USA], Feb 25 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Monday cautioned Republican senators to not fall into the "trap" of Democrats pertaining to "weak and ineffective" border security, a day ahead of the crucial vote on his national emergency declaration.
"I hope our great Republican Senators don’t get led down the path of weak and ineffective Border Security. Without strong Borders, we don’t have a Country - and the voters are on board with us. Be strong and smart, don’t fall into the Democrats “trap” of Open Borders and Crime!" Trump tweeted.
Trump's remarks come as the House Democrats on Tuesday are set to vote on a resolution of disapproval that would block the US President's emergency declaration, in order to get his long-proposed wall built along the country's southern border with Mexico.
On February 15, a defiant Trump declared a national emergency to bypass Congress and fulfill his long-pending demand of building the wall along the border with Mexico. Defending his move, the US President asserted that he had "no choice" but to use his emergency powers to stop illegal immigrants spreading crime and drugs.
Acknowledging that his move could be challenged legally, Trump remarked that his decision would eventually prevail. He said that he could wait for a "long time" to build his long-called barrier, but added that he wanted to move "faster" in this regard.
Trump signed a border security legislation into law approved by the Congress that funds roughly a quarter of the government and thereby, preventing a new partial shutdown that was set to begin from February 16.
The bipartisan agreement would provide US $ 1.3 billion in funding to build the barricade along the US-Mexico border, well short of Trump's demand for US $ 5.7 billion.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, the top two Democrats in the Congress, criticised the US President for his decision and said that they would use “every available remedy” to revoke the "unlawful" emergency declaration. (ANI)
