Kremlin has ‘nothing to comment’ on sale of Venezuelan gold

Moscow [Russia], Feb 1(ANI): Russia has “nothing to comment” on media reports suggesting that Venezuela's gold reserves are being transferred to it amid the ongoing political crisis in the country.
"I don’t know about any talks on the issue, I don’t have any information. In any case, this is a sovereign decision, sovereign right. There’s nothing to comment on, this is Venezuela’s internal affair," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted addressing the media on Friday by Sputnik.
The statement by the Kremlin spokesperson came when Peskov was asked whether talks with Russia on the purchase and sale of Venezuelan gold had been conducted.
“Neither the Kremlin nor the government has anything to do with it. I don’t have any information for anyone here to have to do with it," Peskov said.
According to media reports, Juan Guaido, Venezuela's Opposition leader, who proclaimed himself to be the country's interim president on January 25, had sent a letter to Britain’s Prime Minister Theresa May and Governor of the Bank of England Mark Carney, asking them to prevent President Nicolas Maduro from pulling out any of gold held in the UK's Central Bank.
After the Supreme Court of Venezuela imposed a travel ban on Guaido and froze his assets, the United States in response to the decision slapped sanctions on Venezuela’s state-run oil company adding that there would be “serious consequences” if Guaido is harmed.
However, President Maduro has accused the United States of organising a coup attempt in the South American country, while Russia, China and several other countries have come forward to support Maduro as the country's only legitimate head of state. (ANI)
