London [UK], Nov. 29 (ANI): A chartered plane carrying more than 80 people, including members of the Brazilian first division soccer team Chapocoense, heading to Colombia for a regional tournament final, has crashed on its way to Medellin's international airport. The airport authorities have confirmed that the aircraft reported a serious emergency on its way to the city, reports the Guardian. The plane-a British Aerospace 146 short-haul aircraft-is believed to have started its journey in Sao Paulo, Brazil, at 3.35 p.m. in the afternoon local time. However, as of now, there is no confirmation of any casualties. It is reported that there were 72 passengers and nine crew members on board. The management and emergency team at Jose Maria Cordova airport in Rio Negro, Colombia, in a statement said there had been some survivors. "At the moment we know that the disaster happened in Cerro Gordo the municipality of La Union and that there were 72 passengers and nine crew aboard, including the football team Chapocoense Real. There are reported to be six survivors," the statement read. Federico Gutierrez, Medellin's mayor, confirmed the possibility of survivors. "It's a tragedy of huge proportions," he said. The football team was scheduled to play Copa Sudamerica finals against Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin. (ANI)
