Under proposed new Bangladesh citizenship law, expats may contest local polls
Dhaka [Bangladesh], Feb.9 (ANI): Bangladesh's Law Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday announced that the government will soon come out with a draft of new citizenship law that will allow Bangladeshi expatriates to take part in local government elections, but not lawmakers, president or a Supreme Court judge. Addressing a roundtable on the Proposed Citizenship Act 2016 organised by Centre for Non-Resident Bangladeshis at the Hotel Sonargaon here, Huq was quoted by the Daily Star, as saying that no law would be made that would be harmful for Bangladeshi nationals at home and abroad. He said all rules and sub-rules of the proposed Citizenship Act 2016 would be thoroughly scrutinised before steps were taken to create and announce what he called a people-friendly law. (ANI)
