State of emergency in Yemen's capital as cholera kills 180
Sanaa [Yemen], May 16 (ANI): Yemen has declared a state of emergency in its capital city of Sana'a as a massive cholera outbreak killed more than hundred people in the recent weeks. Citing a statement from the Health Ministry, Yemen's Saba news agency reported that the number of infected patients have increased up to 8,567 and that exceeded the normal rates in which the health system cannot cope with the worsening situation. According to media reports, the latest death toll stands at 180 as released by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The ministry, in its statement, also urged all international organizations to help assist in combating the disaster. Medical facilities are scarce in the armed Houthi movement controlled Sana'a, which is aligned with Iran and fighting a Western-backed, Saudi-led coalition. More than 10,000 people have been killed and millions displaced in more than two years of war that has also destroyed much of its infrastructure. (ANI)
