Nepal opposition demands vote count resumption in Bharatpur
Kathmandu [Nepal], June 2 (ANI): The student union of the opposition CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist) came down the streets of Nepal capital Kathmandu on Thursday night with live torches to demand resumption of the vote count in Bharatpur Metropolitan City. The All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU) chanted slogans against the Election Commission of Nepal and the caretaker government of acting Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. They also said that they are not in favour of a re-poll. After the successful holding of the first phase of local polls on May 14, the vote count in Bharatpur was stalled as 90 ballot papers of Ward No. 19 were found to be torn by Maoist Center cadres. As per law, re-polling should be done in case ballot papers are torn. The opposition has shown a reluctance towards this and has been disrupting parliamentary proceedings the whole week. The Nepali Congress and the Maoist Center formed an alliance in Bharatpur according to which the NC withdrew its candidate and extended support to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal's daughter Renu Dahal for the post of mayor. The opposition CPN-UML's mayoral candidate Devi Gyanwali was trending over the vote count with a vote difference of about 700. Dahal also voted from Chitwan on May 14. The main opposition has threatened to stage country wide protest if their demand is not met and promised to continue disrupting parliament. (ANI)
