Hua Chunying, spokesperson, foreign ministry

Beijing [China], May 3 (ANI): China, on Wednesday, said it intended to play a role in the Korean peninsula peace process.

Hua Chunying, spokeswoman at the Chinese foreign ministry, said, "China will continue to play its due role for the establishment of a peace system on the peninsula," as quoted by Yonhap News Agency

"China is guarding the peace and security of the Korean Peninsula all the time. The temporary truce system should be replaced with a permanent peace regime on the Korean Peninsula," she added.

On being asked as to what steps would China take to play a role in the process, Hua talked about China's previous proposal, a freeze-for-freeze policy that includes bringing to a halt, joint military exercises on the South Korea-U.S. side and the freezing of weapons tests on the North Korean side.

She also said that the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of a peace regime should be pursued simultaneously.

On Friday, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in ended their historic summit with a glimmer of hope and positivity.

They reached an unprecedented set of agreements to end long-running hostilities and sign a peace agreement this year to replace the truce that followed the 1950-53 Korean War.

Many countries such as China, Russia and Japan and the United Nations (UN) have praised the outcome of the successful summit and hoped for the reconciliation of the Korean Peninsula. (ANI)
