Washington D.C. [U.S.A.], Oct 05 (ANI): Unites States Secretary of State, Michael R Pompeo congratulated the newly-elected Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih on his recent electoral victory.
Pompeo talked to Solih on a telephone call and said that the US is looking forward to Solih's inauguration in November. He further asserted that the US wants to expand cooperation between the two countries in support of free and open Indo-Pacific.
Last week, the US State Department Spokesperson, Heather Nauert congratulated Solih in a statement. "The United States congratulates Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on his victory in Maldives' September 23 presidential election. The United States commends the Maldivian people for their commitment to the democratic process and exceptional level of participation in an election that has ushered in a new chapter in their country's history."
In a hotly-contested election in the island nation, held on September 23, Solih, the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party's candidate, emerged victorious by garnering 134,616 votes, according to the provincial results announced by the Maldivian Election Commission. Incumbent Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen, however, secured 96,132 votes only.
Solih will be sworn in on November 17.(ANI)
