Two soldiers killed, 20 injured in Thailand gun and bomb attack

Bangkok [Thailand], September 14 (ANI): Two soldiers were killed and 20 others got injured, including two civilians in a gun attack by suspected Muslim insurgents that began after roadside bomb struck an army patrol vehicle in Thailand's violence-stricken Yala province on Thursday.

Security forces said that the blasts occurred in Yala, in a Malay Muslim province in the south, where a separatist insurgency dragged on for decades, with more than 6,500 killed since 2004 alone, local media reported.

The attack began when a roadside bomb struck a vehicle carrying the army rangers in a remote village in the Yaha district of Yala Province but it did not result in any casualties. A second bomb exploded half an hour later as bomb squad experts arrived to clear the scene, followed by a shootout in which suspected militants killed one soldier and wounded 18 soldiers.

Pramote Prom-in, a spokesman for regional security forces said, "It is believed to be the work of violent groups already creating incidents in the area."

Pattani, along with Yala and Narathiwat, is the three southernmost provinces of Thailand that are haunted by explosions and attacks. (ANI)
