Washington D.C. [USA], Dec 11 (ANI): Democrat Senator Chris Coons stated that United States President Donald Trump could be indicted after he demits office if allegations against Trump of directing his former lawyer Michael Cohen to make illegal payments during the presidential campaign are true.
CNN quoted Coons as saying, "The evidence that's been presented in the Michael Cohen case -- that the President directed him to engage in payments that were intended to influence the outcome of the election -- really sharpens the President's legal risk here, that might well form the basis for an indictment after the President leaves office".
Coons in agreement with the Californian Democratic Representative Adam Schiff said that Trump could face prison time after leaving the White House.
In August, Cohen had pleaded guilty to paying adult-film star Stormy Daniels as part of a non-disclosure agreement over her affair with Trump. He further claimed that he orchestrated the payments at "Trump's direction". He also pleaded guilty in connection with eight criminal charges.
The announcement of the sentence is scheduled for December 12 by Judge William H Pauley and is expected to include jail time and a monetary fine. (ANI)
