Transport strike threatens Pakistan's industrial activity

Karachi [Pakistan], August 9 (ANI): A nationwide strike by goods transporters has raised serious concerns over its potential impact on Pakistan's industrial activity, as business leaders warn that prolonged disruption to raw material supplies could severely affect production, export commitments and the broader economy.
According to The Express Tribune, industrialists have cautioned that the suspension of cargo movement could bring factories to a standstill, disrupt production schedules and jeopardise export commitments, with consequences for employment and Pakistan's already fragile economy.
In a statement reported by The Express Tribune, SITE Association of Industry (SAI) President Abdul Rehman Fudda described the situation as alarming for manufacturers. He said the industrial production system depended heavily on the timely arrival of raw materials and the delivery of finished goods.
Fudda warned that factories unable to receive essential inputs would eventually be forced to slow or halt production. At the same time, delays in the dispatch of finished products could increase financial pressure on businesses.
As reported by The Express Tribune, Fudda also stressed that Pakistan's export-orientated industries were already facing multiple challenges. The transport shutdown, he said, represented an additional and potentially unbearable burden for manufacturers.
The SAI chief further cautioned that disruptions to export consignments could result in penalties, price reductions or claims for damages from international buyers. Such consequences could increase costs for exporters and weaken their financial position.
The Express Tribune reported that industrialists believe the effects of the strike could extend beyond individual factories because a breakdown in transportation affects the entire supply chain. Without a reliable flow of materials and products, manufacturers may struggle to maintain normal operations.
Fudda also warned that delayed export orders could damage Pakistan's reputation among international buyers. According to The Express Tribune, repeated disruptions could undermine confidence in Pakistani suppliers and make it more difficult for exporters to meet contractual obligations.
The Express Tribune noted that continued disruption could therefore place additional pressure on businesses and the wider national economy. (ANI)
