New Delhi [India], July 14 (ANI): Subhash Prasad Gupta, presently serving as India's Deputy Chief of Mission in Hanoi, has been appointed as India's next ambassador to Suriname, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.
Subhash Pradesh Gupta is the Foreign Service Officer of the 2006 batch. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly, according to MEA.
In a statement, MEA said, "Shri Subhash Prasad Gupta (IFS:2006), presently Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy of India, Hanoi, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Suriname."
"He is expected to take up the assignment shortly," it added.
Notably, India and Suriname share close, warm, and friendly relations, reinforced by cultural and people-to-people contacts bridged by the Indian Diaspora's arrival dating back to one and a half centuries, according to MEA.
The diplomatic ties between the two nations were established in 1976 with the Indian
Embassy opened in Paramaribo in 1977 and the Surinamese Embassy opened in New Delhi in 2000. Several high-level visits have been exchanged since the establishment of diplomatic ties between India and Suriname.
President Droupadi Murmu made her maiden foreign visit to Suriname in 2023, upon the invitation of President Santokhi, according to MEA. The visit marked a significant milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.
Earlier in February, a delegation from Suriname made a visit to Ayodhya, the sacred city known for its cultural and religious heritage.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the National Assembly of Suriname, Marinus Bee, arrived in Ayodhya and engaged in spiritual and cultural activities. The delegation offered prayers to the Ram Lalla idol at the Ram Temple. The delegation also took a boat ride on the Sarayu River to explore Ayodhya's temples. (ANI)
