Queen reveals wish for son Prince Charles to lead Commonwealth

London [United Kingdom], Apr. 20 (ANI): Queen Elizabeth II has voiced her wish for her son Prince Charles to succeed her as the leader of the Commonwealth nations.

The Queen's statement comes ahead of the meeting between top government officials from the 53-nation body to discuss the issue.

"It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity to future generations and will decide one day the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949," local media quoted her as saying at the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

The Queen has been head of the Commonwealth since coming to the throne in 1952, but the position is not automatically held by the British monarch.

As the Queen no longer goes abroad, the current summit in London in all likelihood will be her last.

Prince Charles has represented her at recent CHOGMs outside the United Kingdom.

On a related note, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that he would support a bid by Prince Charles to become the new leader of the Commonwealth. (ANI)
