Nepal polls: Left alliance celebrates victory

Kavre [Nepal], Dec 13 (ANI): The red flags have gone high in Nepal, denoting rise of the communist government in the Himalayan nation which witnessed a series of government changes over a period of time.

As per the final results of the election under the First Past The Post system (FPTP) system, the Communist Party of Nepal - Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) has won 80 seats in the Federal Parliament and 166 in the Provincial Assemblies.

The ally of the Left alliance, the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) has stood second as per the concluded vote count with winning 36 Parliamentary seats and 73 Provincial seats.

"The election result was expected and predicted before as the CPN-UML and the Maoist Centre's agreement and the talks of the majority over which they were concentrating their attention is slightly more as claimed by them," said Tirtha Koirala, a senior journalist and analyst in Kathmandu.

The announcement of the merger agreement between the two communist parties of Nepal, the CPN-UML and the Maoist Centre, in October had bombshelled Nepali politics.

With the announcement of the merger, it was expected that the Nepali Congress will be defeated and proved to be feeble in front of the alliance.

As per the final results under the FPTP electoral system, the Nepali Congress, the biggest party of the dissolved Parliament, has won 23 seats in federal constituencies and 45 seats in the provincial constituencies.

But the vote count of Proportional Representation is expected to change the instance by pushing up the Nepali Congress to the second biggest party in the Parliament.

According to the data from the Nepal's Election Commission Nepal by 9:15 pm (Local Time) on Wednesday, the vote difference between the UML and the Nepali Congress is about 86,000.

As per the vote count, the biggest achiever of the general election, the UML has gained 23,93,951 votes followed by Nepali Congress with 23,07,631 votes.

The former rebel guerilla group Maoist Centre was left with 9,42,063 votes but the merger between the two allies is expected to take an interesting twist in Nepali politics with many issues on board.

The issue of the constitution amendment and the relation of the UML with the Madhesh-based parties are expected to escalate further.

Nepal will be getting its new government under the new structure of federalism next month. (ANI)
