Nepal Parliament convenes last meeting

Kathmandu [Nepal], Oct 14 (ANI): Nepal's Constituent Assembly (CA) -turned-legislative parliament on Friday convened its last meeting and will be dissolved from Saturday midnight ahead of federal and provincial elections scheduled for Nov 26 and Dec 7.

The 601-member CA which promulgated the new constitution in 2015, was given continuity as the transitional parliament to lay the ground for the next election to elect a new parliament.

As per the newly promulgated constitution the term of the incumbent parliament ends a day before the candidates file their nomination for the House of Representatives election.

Article 296 of the constitution has set January 21, 2018 as the date for the expiry of current parliament but it has also stated that the parliament will be dissolved if the election for the House of Representative is called before.

The Government of Nepal under the Prime Minister Ship of Sher Bahadur Deuba has called for the election of the Provincial Center and the House of Representative in two phases i.e. November and December.

The Election Commission has asked the political parties to submit the list of candidates under the Proportional Representation electoral system on October 15 and have announced October 22 as the date for filing candidacy under the First- Past- the- Post Electoral System.

House Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar has called another meeting of the parliament on Saturday but will have no business to deal with.

The politicos are expected to address the parliament with farewell remarks. (ANI)
