Kathmandu [Nepal], January 30 (ANI): Interim Nepali Prime Minister Sushila Karki paid homage to the martyrs at the Sahid Smarak, a commemorative site in Kathmandu on Martyr's Day.
Prime Minister Karki, along with the Council of Ministers, laid a wreath at the statues of those who sacrificed their lives for democracy and the republic's establishment. Issuing a message, the Prime Minister said that the courage, consciousness and determination of martyrs have brought the country to a historic turning point.
The Prime Minister Karki paid heartfelt tribute to all martyrs who sacrificed their invaluable lives for civil liberties and democracy.
"Their courage, awareness and resolve have placed the nation at a historic juncture of change. May no mother's lap be left empty again," the message stated. She also paid her respects to the brave warriors who attained martyrdom during the Gen-Z movement, which rose with hopes for justice, equality, accountable governance, and a brighter future.

Prime Minister Karki said the responsibility of building a state based on governance values, morality, and respect for citizens must always remain with every ruler.
Nepal on Friday is observing Martyrs' Day across the country with various programs held in remembrance of those who fought for democracy and freedom in different historical periods. The occasion has been marked annually since January 1951.
Deputy Prime Minister, ministers, members of parliament from various political parties, the Chief Secretary of the Government of Nepal, heads of security agencies, and the Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City also paid their respects to the martyrs.
Celebrated every year on Magh 16 (End of January), the country observes the day with various programs in memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom.
The Day is observed by remembering the struggles and devotion of martyrs Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, as well as the contributions of other martyrs to the establishment of democracy in the country.
A week long Martyr's week also was also observed in memory of brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives against the then Rana regime. The Rana rulers at the time executed Shukra Raj Shastri in Teku-based Pachali, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Sifal, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasarath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati within a week, while demanding independence.
