Mohamed Nasheed alleges President Yameen violating UN sanctions on N Korea

Male [Maldives], Feb.28 (ANI): Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that President Abdulla Yameen went against the sanctions imposed by the United Nations and allowed the ships to transfer cargo to North Korean ships on the high seas.

Nasheed took to Twitter and said, "It's concerning, but unsurprising, to learn Prez Yameen is again breaking UN sanctions, this time with North Korea. He's getting Maldives flagged ships to transfer cargo to North Korean ships on the high seas. In the 1990s, Prez Yameen did the same with Burmese junta."

Yesterday, Nasheed had claimed that over 50 Maldives "National Defence Force (MNDF) and Police Officers" were detained by the loyalists of President Yameen.

Maldivian Democratic Party member Abdulla Shahid also came to the fore and urged President Yameen to "immediately release" the MPs who were arrested from the peaceful Joint Opposition protest on Monday.

The Maldives is facing political unrest since President Yameen imposed emergency after refusing to implement a Supreme Court order of freeing imprisoned opposition leaders. (ANI)
