Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], Mar 10 (ANI): A Malaysian man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of posting offensive social media posts against Islam, police said.
The 22-year-old Facebook account user, identified as "Ayea Yea," pleaded guilty to 10 charges in a Kuala Lumpur court, CNN reported.
Three other social media account owners were booked by the Royal Malaysia Police on Friday for allegedly insulting Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, CNN quoted Malaysia's Bernama news agency.
The 52-year-old Facebook user, named "Yazid Kong", pleaded guilty to two charges of posting derogatory posts against Islam. He will be sentenced in two days.
The remaining two social media account users, identified as "AlvinChow333" and "Danny A'antonio Jr", denied the charges against them. However, they will be in custody until the next court hearing on April 5.
The four people were charged on the grounds of "prejudicing the maintenance of harmony on the grounds of religion, publishing any statement to incite a community" and "improper use of network services," Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun was quoted by CNN as saying.
There have been numerous cases on offensive social media posts against Islam in Malaysia, a Muslim-majority nation. The country's police have said that they have received 929 reports on such cases till date.
On March 1, Malaysian NGOs staged a protest over a derogatory social media post against Islam by Wai Foo Sing, who was arrested in February for posting a cartoon image on the platform. (ANI)
