Japan Supreme Court rejects ex-Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn appeal

Tokyo [Japan], Apr 13 (ANI): The apex court of Japan on Saturday rejected an appeal filed by lawyers for former Nissan Motors chairman Carlos Ghosn against his detention following his re-arrest last week over fresh allegations of financial fraud.
The Japan Times reported that the appeal to the Supreme Court was made by Ghosn's lawyers on Wednesday after the Tokyo District Court rejected their objection to its approval for an initial 10 days’ detention for Ghosn through Sunday.
On Friday, the district court further decided to extend the detention period of Ghosn to April 22, but only for two days less than what was requested by his prosecutors.
On April 4, the former Nissan chief was arrested for the fourth time over allegations of misusing the company's funds for personal purposes.
Ghosn's re-arrest on Thursday comes days after he was released on bail by a Tokyo court after spending 108 days in detention, during which he was indicted on charges of aggravated breach of trust and underreporting his remuneration for Japanese carmaker Nissan Motor.
On April 8, Ghosn was removed from the Nissan shareholders board.
He was also fired as the chairman of both Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors following his arrest in December, after which he stepped down as the chairman and CEO of French carmaker Renault.
Meanwhile, the prosecution case of Ghosn has brought the Japanese criminal justice system under international scrutiny.
Practices of detaining a suspect for long periods and conducting interrogations without any lawyer present have been reported by critics as “hostage justice.” (ANI)
