Indian embassy ascertains details about journalist arrested in Maldives

Male [Maldives], Feb 09 (ANI): The Indian embassy in the Maldives is in touch with local authorities to ascertain details about an Indian national and a British national of Indian origin who were arrested in Male under State of Emergency decree for national security purposes.

"We have received information about an Indian national, Shri Money Sharma, working as a journalist has been detained by the Maldivian authorities," Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

"We have asked our embassy to get in touch with the local authorities to ascertain more details of the case."

In response to a query on media reports that the Maldives has sought support from China to maintain security for Chinese investments, the Spokesperson said, "We note that China has said that the Maldives government has the ability to protect the security of Chinese personnel and institutions in the Maldives."

Raveesh Kumar hoped that all countries "play a constructive role in the Maldives, instead of doing the opposite".

Money Sharma from Punjab and Atish Ravji Patel from London were reporters employed with AFP news agency.(ANI)
