Astana [Kazakhstan], Mar 13 (ANI): Human rights activist Serikzhan Bilash’s lawyer Aiman Umarova on Wednesday said that her client was arrested by Kazakh Police and charged with allegedly inciting ethnic strife.
Bilash is the co-founder of Atajurt, an organisation that has publicly lobbied for the closure of Xinjiang camps in China’s far west, according to a report by CNN.
The situation in Xinjiang has drawn harsh criticism from across the globe.
According to a report by the US government, as many as two million Uighurs, and other Muslim minorities are estimated to have been imprisoned in huge detention centres in China's far west.
Bilash was arrested on Saturday in Kazakhstan’s largest city Almaty. He is currently under house arrest in the country’s capital Astana.
The activist could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
According to experts, over one million Uighurs, as well as the members of The Kazakh, Kyrgyz and Hui Muslim minorities, have been detained in internment camps where they are forced to undergo forceful re-education or indoctrination.
Beijing, however, has refuted such claims, outlining that only people who have committed minor offences when involved in terrorist activities are made to go through vocational training at “vocational education institutes.” (ANI)
