Dhaka [Bangladesh], Mar 17 (ANI): Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during a wreath-laying ceremony here on Sunday paid homage to the country's co-founder, also known as 'Bangabondhu' or 'friend of Bengal', Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on his 99th birth anniversary.
Dhaka Tribune reported that events and programmes were held across the country to pay tribute to Rehman.
Following the wreath-laying ceremony, Hasina stood in silence for some time as a mark of respect in memory of the Father of the Nation.
Other senior leaders of the Bangladesh Awami League party, along with Cabinet ministers and parliament members were also present at the event that took place in front of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
The Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave a Guard of Honour on this occasion.
The birthday of Rahman is being observed as the National Children’s Day across the country today.
It was the dream of Rehman to build a "Sonar Bangla" or Golden Bengal.
The homecoming of Rahman from a Pakistani jail on January 10, 1972, was the culmination of Bangladesh's victory in the nine-month Liberation War.
The theme of this year’s birthday of Rehman and the National Children’s Day is “Bangabandhu’s birthday: Rinse the lives of children with colour.” (ANI)
