Quetta (Balochistan) [Pakistan], Jun 7 (ANI): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday named Alauddin Marri as the new caretaker chief minister of Balochistan province.
ECP Additional Secretary Akhtar Nazir announced the name during a press conference in Islamabad. Marri belongs to Mastung district of Balochistan province, Express Tribune reported.
Marri's name comes hours after Pakistan's top electoral body appointed Dr. Hasan Askari as caretaker chief minister of Punjab province.
Dr. Askari is a Pakistani political scientist and military analyst, noted for his work in comparative politics, nuclear weapons and the country's domestic policy, Geo TV reported.
Prior to Marri's appointment, five names were suggested by the six-member parliamentary committee to head the interim government till the general elections are held on July 25. The names were - former diplomat Qazi Ashraf, ex-Balochistan assembly speaker Sardar Aslam Bhootani, MPA Alauddin Marri, former environment minister Prince Ahmed Ali and former senator Kamran Murtaza, as per the report.
The parliamentary committee later handed the decision of appointing an interim chief minister for Balochistan to the ECP after the committee members failed to reach a consensus.
With this, all the four provinces of Pakistan now have a caretaker chief minister.
Earlier this week, Dost Mohammad Khan was sworn-in as the caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) province, while Fazlur Rehman was appointed the interim chief minister of Sindh province last week. (ANI)
