6.3 magnitude quake hits northern Chile, no major damage reported

London [U.K.], Oct. 10 (ANI): A powerful earthquake, measuring 6.3-magnitude on Richter Scale, rocked northern Chile on Tuesday.

The quake, which was moderately deep at 82 kilometers (51 miles), struck at 3.32am local time. The epicenter in Tarapaca was 73 kilometers (45 miles) east of the port city of Arica, and 87 kilometers (54 miles) southeast of the larger Peruvian city of Tacna, the Independent quoted the United States Geological Survey (USGS) as saying.

However, no tsunami warning was issued. The tremors were felt near the border with Peru.

Earlier, in April a 7.1-magnitude earthquake had struck the west coast of Chile, shaking the capital Santiago as well.

Chile has a long history of massive quakes, due to being located on the so-called "Pacific Ring of Fire".

Chile was a victim to the largest recorded 9.5 magnitude earthquake that hit it in 1960.

Another 8.8 magnitude quake hit off the south-central coast in 2010, also leading to a tsunami. (ANI)
