We showed a lot of guts against Pakistan: Roston Chase

Roseau [Dominica], May 15 (ANI): Despite slumping to a three-match Test series defeat against Pakistan, West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase has praised his team's overall efforts and also described his fighting century on the final day as the "toughest" of his career. Chasing a target of 304 runs to win, Chase remained unbeaten on 101, including 12 boundaries and a six, when Yasir Shah bowled Shannon Gabriel with the last ball of the penultimate over of the Test to help Pakistan secure a 101-run win at the Windsor Park in Dominica. Chase, who struck his third Test century, ran out of partners with just six balls left in the game to trigger Pakistani celebrations as the West Indies were dismissed for 202 to lose the series 1-2. And the 25-year-old admitted that although they had lost the series, his side-including him- had showed a lot of guts by coming almost close to the victory. "I wouldn't say it's up there with the other two but a century is a century. We ended up losing the match but this one was the hardest for me. The others were more fluent and the conditions were a lot easier but this one was really tough for me. The pitch was a slower one, you couldn't play a lot of shots, the outfield was very slow and the bowlers really put the ball in good areas. This one was the toughest out of my few so far," ESPNcricinfo quoted Chase as saying. "I thought it was a fighting effort. It's sad to see that it didn't mean much in the end because we lost the match but I thought the guys showed a lot of guts and effort not only today but in the whole match. [We] even put ourselves in the chance of, maybe not winning but, at least drawing the series," he added. Chase amassed 403 runs, including two centuries and two half-centuries, as he finished the series as highest run-scorer with an average of 100.75. No other batsman notched up more than 300 runs during the series. Reflecting on the same, Chase said he was glad to average more than 100 in the series against a quality attack, adding that he is hoping to display a similar kind of performance in the upcoming series against England. "Even though I'm always a confident guy, it does [add] a lot to see that I average a 100 in the series against a quality attack. I'm not going to let it get to my head and I'm going to go back home and the next Test series is England, so hopefully I should be there. I'll go and look at some footage of the English guys and see what weaknesses they have, what I'll be looking to exploit and see if that can work. Work hard on those weaknesses so that I can put up some good performances in that series as well," Chase said. It was Pakistan's first Test series victory in the Caribbean, thus giving a perfect send-off to retiring Misbah-ul-Haq and veteran middle-order batsman Younis Khan.(ANI)
