Mumbai Test: Jennings debut ton gives England edge on Day 1
Mumbai [India], Dec. 8 (ANI): 24-year-old Keaton Jennings on Thursday scored a brilliant century on debut as England took control on the opening day of the fourth Test against India here at the Wankhede Stadium. England ended the day at 283-5, thanks to Jennings' innings of 112, which was studded with 13 boundaries. The left-handed batsman, who scored his maiden hundred in Tests, became the 14th cricketer to have brought up a ton on debut against India in the longer format of the game. The South Africa born also became the 19th England cricketer to have scored a Test hundred in his opening game. Winning the toss and electing to bat, skipper Alastair Cook and Jennings gave a solid start to their team by putting up a 99-run stand. Cook was stumped off a brilliant delivery by Ravichandran Jadeja at his individual score of 46. Joe Root, who came to bat at No. 3, then shared 37-run stand along with the debutant before being brilliantly caught at slips by Cheteshwar Pujara. Jennings and Moeen Ali mustered a 94-run stand for the third wicket before the Ravichandran Ashwin hit the England team. Ali was dismissed by the ace Indian off-spinner shortly after he crossed the 50-run mark, he then went on to clinch the wickets of the centurion Jennings and Jonny Bairstow (14). At Stumps on Day 1, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler remained unbeaten at the crease on 25 and 18 respectively. Many records were broken during the course of the England innings. Cook became the sixth player to score 2000 runs against India in Tests. Ashwin was pick of the Indian bowlers as he scalped four wickets, otherwise the situation would have been worse for the hosts, who are currently leading the five-match series 2-0. (ANI)
