Australia win Adelaide Test, evade series whitewash
Adelaide [Australia], Nov. 27 (ANI): Australia on Sunday defeated South Africa by seven wickets to claim a consolatory win and evade a whitewash in the three-match Test series here at the Adelaide Oval. Chasing the target of 127 runs on Day Four, Australia lost the wickets of David Warner (47), Usman Khawaja (0) and skipper Steve Smith (40). Debutants Matt Renshaw and Peter Handscomb remained unbeaten at 34 and 1 respectively and saw one of Australia's biggest victories in recent times. With a paltry target to win, Australia were never going to tested. Warner got them off to a racy start before being run out amidst confusion. Smith too played a solid knock but he departed just at the doorstep of the victory. Earlier, resuming at the overnight score of 194 for 6 with lead of 70 runs, the visitors added 56 for the loss of their last four wickets to set up a target of 123 for the Aussies. Stephen Cook moved to his second Test century before he was the last man to fall, bowled by Mitchell Starc for 104 as the South Africans were eventually dismissed for 250. Khawaja was adjudged Man of the Match for his 145 in the first innings and South Africa's Vernon Philander bagged the Man of the Series award for taking 12 wickets in the entire series. With this win at the Adelaide Oval, Australia ended its streak of five consecutive Test losses which started in Lanka where they were whitewashed in the three-match series and then suffered losses against the Faf du Plessis-led side in the first two Tests. Despite the defeat, the Proteas clinched the three-match series 2-1, having won the matches at Hobart and Perth. (ANI)
