Serena fined for missing press conference

Johannesburg [South Africa], March 23 (ANI): Twenty-three time grand slam champion Serena Williams has been fined for not showing up for a press conference post her first round exit from the Miami Open.

Serena is facing a 1, 000 USD fine for not following the tournament guidelines, reports the Sport24.

The American tennis sensation crashed out of the tournament after suffering a 6-3, 6-2 from newly-minted BNP Paribas Open champion Naomi Osaka.

Japanese No.1 Osaka handed the eight-time champion her first-ever loss before the fourth round in Miami.

Williams, however, later released a statement through the Women's Tennis Association (WTA).

"Every tournament is an opportunity for me to better understand the areas I need to improve to be my best," Williams said in the statement.

"Naomi played a great match and I learn something each time I play. I look forward to continuing my return by progressing every day."

"I'm so grateful for my fans who continue to support me every step of this incredible journey."

Miami Open was the former world number one's only second competitive appearance since ending a 15-month absence due to pregnancy.

Earlier, she was ousted from the Indian Wells Masters after going down against elder sister Venus Williams in the third round of the tournament. (ANI)
