Agassi could prove to be good coach for Djokovic: Becker

Johannesburg [South Africa], Dec 16 (ANI): German tennis legend Boris Becker believes Andre Agassi would prove to be an effective coach for Novak Djokovic, as the Serbian tennis maestro is bidding to clinch his seventh Australian Open title next month.

In September, Djokovic had said that Agassi would continue to remain his coach when he makes a return to the game after remaining sidelined for six months due to an elbow injury.

Djokovic roped in Agassi into his team only in May, prior to the French Open.

The duo worked together for just two months before the 30-year-old tennis maestro suffered the elbow injury during the quarter-finals clash of Wimbledon which eventually forced him to cut short his season in July.

And Becker, who had spent three years as Djokovic's coach and helped him win six out of his 12 Grand Slam titles, said that Agassi is a very good man and that he has full potential to guide the Serb to glories.

"In Melbourne you will already see a closer co-operation. Does Agassi have the potential to be a coach? Yes. Was he number one? Yes. Is he a Grand Slam winner? Yes. Does he have the character to tell Djokovic the truth? Yes. Is he economically dependent [on him]? These are good factors to see a coach working with a superstar," Sport24 quoted Becker, as saying.

Recently, former world number one Djokovic had also roped in Australian tennis analyst Craig O'Shannessy in his support staff, which also consists of recently-retired Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic.

Djokovic, whose season was cut short after sustaining a right elbow injury at Wimbledon, is slated to return to action with the season-opening Qatar ExxonMobil Open in Doha.

Meanwhile, the first grand slam of the year will begin on January 15 and end on 28. (ANI)
