WADA calls for Russian athletes to be banned from Rio Games
Johannesburg, July 18 (ANI): The World Anti-Doping Agency on Monday called on global sports governing bodies to ban Russia from the forthcoming Rio Olympics in the wake of damning and devastating report into the embattled country's sport. An investigation by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren for WADA revealed that Russia orchestrated state-sponsored doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, Sport24 reported. "WADA calls on Sport Movement to deny Russian athletes participation at international comp including Rio until 'culture change' achieved," WADA spokesman Ben Nichols tweeted. "WADA: doping scheme across 30 sports mean there can no longer be presumption of innocence. Russian doping control system called into question." McLaren stated in his report that Russia's secret service and top sporting authorities conspired to cover up widespread doping, substituting doping-tainted samples with clean ones during the Winter Games in Russia. Meanwhile, International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach described the McLaren report "a shocking and unprecedented attack on the integrity of sports and on the Olympic Games". The IOC will decide on Tuesday about possible sanctions for the Rio Games. (ANI)
