UTT: Maharashtra United ride on Harmeet's twin wins against RP-SG Mavericks
Chennai (Tamil Nadu)[India], July 19 (ANI): Harmeet Desai scored two victories to put DHFL Maharashtra United in control (9-3 lead) over RP-SG Mavericks after four matches on Day Six of the Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT) at the Nehru Indoor Stadium in Chennai Harmeet put his team ahead with a stunning 2-1 (11-6, 9-11, 11-6) win over Austrian world No. 23 Stefan Fegerl of RP-SG Mavericks in the men's singles (Foreign v Indian), Tuesday's first match. Harmeet, ranked 79 in the world, got off to a flying start before the Austrian derailed him in the second game. Veteran Fu Yu extended United's lead to 4-2 with a 2-1 (11-3, 11-6, 9-11) over Archana Girish Kamath of Mavericks in the women's singles (Foreign v Indian). Fu Yu, the China born, took the third game to win her team a point. In a tense mixed doubles (Foreign/Indian pair), Harmeet and Liu Jia (Austria) pulled United further ahead on points (lead 6-3), with a close 2-1 (10-11, 11-7, 11-10) win over A Sharath Kamal/ Sofia Polcanova (Austria) of Mavericks. It appeared like there was no stopping United on this day as Portuguese world No 48 Joao Monteiro upset higher-ranked Fegerl 3-0 (11-3, 11-4, 11-9) in the men's singles (Foreign player category) to hand his team a 9-3 lead after four matches.
