Sports Ministry to form committee for improvement in national sports code
Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], Jan. 2 (ANI): In the aftermath of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) episode wherein tainted Suresh Kalmadi and Abhay Chautala were appointed as life presidents of the national Olympic body, the government on Monday decided to form a committee under the chairmanship of secretary of sports ministry for improvement in national sports code. "The sports ministry has decided, especially after the IOA episode, to form a committee for improvement in national sports code. It would be chaired by the secretary of sports ministry," Union Sports Minister Vijay Goel told ANI. The Sports Ministry had earlier suspended the recognition granted to the IOA. "We have suspended recognition granted to Indian Olympic Association until it reverses its decision on appointments of Kalmadi and Chautala," Goel had said. Following the suspension, the IOA will cease to enjoy the government's assistance, financial or otherwise. The ministry had issued a showcause notice to IOA last Wednesday after the IOA on December 27 appointed Kalmadi and Chautala as life presidents in its general body meeting in Chennai. Kalmadi, the CWG scam accused, has voluntarily decided to step down from the post while Chautala, former IOA president, has insisted that he is ready to relinquish the post if the International Olympic Committee (IOC) tells him to do so.
