Rio 2016: Thanackal Gopi finishes 25th, Kheta Ram on 26th in Men's Marathon

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug.21 (ANI): Indian long distance walkers Thanackal Gopi and Kheta Ram, who were competing with 155 athletes at the Rio Olympics, produced their personal best to end their campaign in the prestigious quadrennial event at 25th and 26th spots, respectively, in the men's marathon on Sunday.

Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Aug.21 (ANI): Indian long distance walkers Thanackal Gopi and Kheta Ram, who were competing with 155 athletes at the Rio Olympics, produced their personal best to end their campaign in the prestigious quadrennial event at 25th and 26th spots, respectively, in the men's marathon on Sunday. Gopi finished the race in 2:15:25 while Ram completed the race just one second later with timings of 2:15:26 in Sambrodromo. Meanwhile, Nitendra Singh, another walker in fray, displayed an extremely disappointing performance as he made a lowly 83rd-place finish with a timing of 2:22:52. Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge won gold with timings of 2:08:44 while Ethiopia's Fesiya Lilesa (2:09:54) and Galen Rupp (2:10:05) of USA bagged silver and bronze medals, respectively. Earlier, Gopi and Ram had qualified for the Rio Olympics by finishing second and third, respectively, among Indian runners in the Mumbai Marathon in January. Nitendra, on the other hand, set a new Mumbai Marathon record of 2:15:48 by an Indian to finish at the top spot. (ANI)
