IOC bars Russian sports minister from Rio Olympics
Johannesburg, July 19 (ANI): The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko from the next month's Rio Olympics in the wake of damning and devastating reports into the embattled country's sport. An investigation by Canadian lawyer Richard McLaren for World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) revealed that Russia orchestrated state-sponsored doping scheme at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. McLaren in his report stated that Russia's secret service and top sporting authorities conspired to cover up widespread doping, substituting doping-tainted samples with clean ones during the Winter Games in Russia. Following an emergency teleconference, the IOC said that it would not grant any accreditation to any official of the Russian Sports Ministry or any other person mentioned in the report, Sport24 reported. The IOC, however, delayed its decision on a possible blanket ban on the Russian athletes from the next month's Rio Olympics, stating that it is seeking legal advice before making any decision. The ruling came after the WADA called on global sports governing bodies to ban Russia from the forthcoming Rio Olympics until culture change is achieved.(ANI)
