Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], July 27 (ANI): The recognition and growth of football in the Northeastern province of Meghalaya are growing gradually, and recently the state has also introduced `Meghalaya Baby League` to encourage tiny players to play football.
Children in the age group of 4 to 13 years are participating in the league, which is a six-month-long event.
The league is organized every weekend and on other holidays, thus not affecting the children's school schedule.
The aim is to provide children with a regular exposure to competitive football over a period of six months in order to develop their game, instil confidence, and create a base of players that can be drawn on and taken to the next level in their teenage years.
A total of 12 teams are participating in 25 matches spread across all age groups from 4 years to 13 years.
The 4-5 years and 5-6 years age groups are five-a-side with a minimum of 10 players in each team.
The 8-9 years, 10-11 years and 12-13 years age groups are seven-a-side and have a minimum of 12 players per team.
Participation is open to football clubs, schools, communities, localities, organizations and individuals who are registering their own baby league clubs.
After the completion of the league, grassroots leaders certification courses will also be provided to all the coaches associated with the centres. (ANI)
