CWG 2018: Tejaswini Sawant shoots silver in 50m rifle prone

Gold Coast [Australia], April 12 (ANI): Indian shooters continue their sublime run in the ongoing 21st Commonwealth Games, with Tejaswini Sawant picking a silver medal in the women's 50m rifle prone event here at Belmont Shooting Centre on Thursday.

On the eighth day of the Games, the 37-year-old brought her years of experience into play as she shot 102.1, 102.4, 103.3, 102.8, 103.7, 104.6 over six series in the finals to clinch her sixth Commonwealth medal. She ended with a cumulative score of 618.9 to finish at the second spot at Belmont Shooting Centre.

While Martina Lindsay Veloso of Singapore bagged the gold medal with a total score of 621, Sotland's Seonaid Mcintosh settled for a bronze medal after posting a score of 618.1.

Anjum Moudgil, the other Indian in the fray, failed to qualify for the finals as she posted disappointing 98.3, 98.9, 97.9, 101.8, 101.8, 103.5 to end with a total score of 602.2 and finish 16th in the field of 20 competitors.

Both Tejaswini and Anjum will also represent India in the Women's 50m Rifle 3 Positions event on Friday.

Meanwhile, on day one of qualifications for the Men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, India's Neeraj Kumar shot a table-topping 291 in the precision stage. Anish Bhanwala was third with 286. The top six from the 13-man field will qualify for the finals on Friday, after the second Rapid Fire stage.

Elsewhere on the eighth day of the Games, star wrestler Sushil Kumar (74 kg) and Rahul Aware (57 kg) stormed into the finals of their respective event, assuring India of at least two silver medals. While Sushil hammered Australia's Connor Evans, Rahul defeated Muhammad Bilal of Pakistan in their semi-final clashes at Carrara Sports Arena.

In Table Tennis, Achanta Sharath Kamal, Manika Batra, Mouma Das and Harmeet Desai have all booked their place in the quarterfinals of the prestigious quadrennial event.

Meanhwile, India's Arpinder Singh and Arpinder Singh have qualified for the finals of the men's triple jump event.

While 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist Arpinder qualified after topping his Group B with an effort of 16.39m at Carrara Stadium Horiz, Babu made a fifth-place finish in Group A with an effort of 15.98m.

With Tejaswini’s silver, India now have a total of 25 medals, including 12 gold, five silver and eight bronze.(ANI)
