Jakarta [Indonesia], June 26 (ANI): The Indian team of Ganapathy & Varun Thakkar won the gold medal in men's 49er FX event at the end of the fourth and penultimate day of the Asian Sailing Championship here on Sunday.
In a truly dominating performance, the duo established a handsome lead against their Thai counterparts, Don and Dylan Whitcraft, to finish on top of the podium.
Leading the team, India's Ekta Yadav & Shaila Charles acquired the second spot in women's 49er FX section winning bronze medal for the country.
The achievements came under the unfavourable weather conditions marred by strong winds and heavy rain. If weather had not changed so drastically it may have been that India would have had at least 2 more podium finishes in the Laser 4.7 and radial classes.
The Yachting Association of India, headed by the Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Sunil Lanba has pulled out all stops in the recent past to ensure that the best were selected and thereafter trained extensively at overseas venues with the wholehearted support of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports(MYAS).
The event witnessed participation from 15 nations across the World. Indian contingent included a sum total of 29 players out of which 18 were from Madhya Pradesh.
An eight-day event concluded in Jakarta on June 25. (ANI)
