Copa America: Uruguay defeat Chile 1-0, finish on top in group C

The Indian Women's Hockey team opened their FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers 2026 Hyderabad, Telangana campaign with a dominant 4-0 win over Uruguay at the G. M. C. Balayogi Hockey Ground (Gachibowli Hockey Complex) on Sunday.

The tournament format divides the field into two pools of four teams, with the top two teams from each pool progressing to the semifinals. The winners of both semifinals, and the Bronze medal match, will secure automatic qualification for the World Cup. Additionally, the highest world-ranked team finishing fourth in Hyderabad will also earn a place at the tournament.

Representatives from the United States of America, Canada, and Mexico marked 100 days to go until the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026 by illuminating the Empire State Building in the colours of the three host countries on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Wales arrives fresh off a runner-up finish at the 2025 EuroHockey Championship II, fiercely chasing their first World Cup appearance since 1983.

The tournament will feature eight teams, including India, England, Scotland, Republic of Korea, Italy, Uruguay, Wales, and Austria, competing for three available spots in the World Cup. The teams finishing first, second, and third in the qualifiers will qualify directly for the World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, scheduled for August 15-30.
