London, [UK] Aug 12 (ANI): James Anderson and Stuart Broad joined forces to take eight wickets as England crushed India by an innings and 159 runs on the fourth day of the second Test here at the Lord's Cricket Ground on Sunday.
Resuming at yesterday's score of 356-7, England added 39 runs in the morning session of the fourth day before declaring their first-innings at 396-7 in reply to the Virat Kohli-led side's lowly first-inning total of 107.
Chris Woakes and Jonny Bairstow were the top scorers for the hosts as they contributed 137 and 93 runs, respectively. The duo also went on to stitch a huge partnership of 189 runs for the sixth wicket. Meanwhile, Sam Curran was the last batsman to dismiss with a brisk knock of 40, including four boundaries and a six.
For India, Hardik Pandya was the most economical bowler as he finished with the figures of three for six, followed by Mohammad Shami who scalped three wickets for 96 runs. Ishant Sharma also chipped in with a wicket.
In their second innings, the Kohli-led side failed to counter England's bowling attack and suffered a dramatic collapse, with none of the batsmen managing to score even a half-century.
All-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin was the highest scorer for India with his unbeaten knock of 33, followed by Hardik Pandya's 26 runs.
England record wicket-taker Anderson scalped four wickets for 23 runs to finish with brilliant match figures of nine for 43. By bagging nine wickets, he also became the first player to clinch 100 Test wickets at Lord's.
While Broad also finished with four wickets by conceding just 44 runs, Chris Woakes chipped in with two wickets to steer England to an innings victory over India.
Woakes was declared 'Man of the Match` for his brilliant contribution with both bat and ball.
With the win, England have now taken a 2-0 lead in the ongoing five-match Test series, having won the opening match against India by 31 runs. The Kohli-led side will now have to win the third Test, beginning August 18 at the Trent Bridge, if they want to keep themselves alive in the series. (ANI)
