Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], February 3 (ANI): Women's Premier League franchise Gujarat Giants on Friday announced the appointment of Rachael Haynes as the head coach of the team ahead of the inaugural edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL), which will take place in March-April 2023.
Gujarat Giants appointed Nooshin Al Khadeer as the bowling coach, Tushar Arothe will handle the charge as the batting coach, and Gavan Twining as the fielding coach.
Legendary Indian cricketer and former captain Mithali Raj had earlier been appointed as the team's mentor and advisor.
Over the years, Mithali's trailblazing achievements and contributions to Indian cricket have not only earned her numerous awards and accolades but have also played a key role in bringing women's cricket into the limelight, both on national and international platforms.
"The likes of Rachael Haynes, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe, and Gavan Twining will certainly take the performance of the team notches up," Mithali said in a statement released by the franchise.
"Not only have they carved a niche for themselves in their roles, but their stories of resilience will [also] be an inspiration for the team," she added.
Rachael was a key member of Australia's women's cricket squad. The left-handed all-rounder played 167 matches for Australia - six Tests, 77 ODIs and 84 T20Is - in an international career that started at Lord's in 2009.
Haynes captained Australia on 14 occasions when filling in for Meg Lanning, most notably during the 2017-18 Ashes when Lanning was ruled out due to a shoulder injury. The 36-year-old finished having won two ICC Women's World Cup titles for Australia in 2013 and 2022 and another two ICC Women's T20 World Cups in 2018 and 2020.
She also played for the Sydney Thunder in the Women's Big Bash League, where she created a name for herself by leading the run-scoring charts.
"The Women's Premier League is such an exciting addition to the cricket landscape. The opportunity to be involved in the inaugural season with the Adani Sportline owned Gujarat Giants and working with the brilliant Mithali Raj is something I'm really looking forward to. We have formed a wonderful coaching team, with Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe and Gavan Twining, who will be bringing on board their rich experience which will help the team to play an exciting brand of cricket which our fans will enjoy watching," said Haynes.
