Delhi Test: Kohli's double ton places India on top

New Delhi [India], Dec 03 (ANI): Skipper Virat Kohli's formidable 243 gave India a massive advantage against Sri Lanka as the visitors were trailing India by 405 runs at the end of Day two of the third and concluding Test here at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground.

Earlier in the day, India declared the innings at 536/7.

It was Kohli who pummeled the opposition into submission and gave India an upper hand in the Test with his record sixth double ton.

Batting at his home ground, Kohli eased past West Indies' great Brian Lara, who had hit five Test tons.

Coming to bat in reply, Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews scored an unbeaten half-century to take the team to 131/3 at stumps.

The Islanders, who were required to be inseparable with bat to maintain a good score, however lost early wickets.

Opener Dimuth Karunaratne was suspended for a duck by Mohammed Shami.

He was followed by Dhananjaya de Silva, who came to bat at number three, but succumbed to Ishant Sharma's lethal bowling for just one.

It was Dilruwan Perera and Mathews who then stood firm for the Lankans until Perera (42) was given an lbw on Ravindra Jadeja's ball.

Sri Lanka will resume the day on Monday with skipper Dinesh Chandimal batting at 25 and Mathews on 57.

The hosts are currently leading the series 1-0, and need just a draw to equal Australia and West Indies' record of nine consecutive Test series wins.(ANI)
