New Delhi [India], July 29 (ANI): Congress MP Hibi Eden on Tuesday submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha to discuss what he called the "illegal arrest and mob violence" against two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh.
In his notice, Eden said, "The issue concerns the illegal arrest, fabricated charges, denial of bail, and mob violence against two Catholic nuns in Chhattisgarh--an attack on the foundational principles of religious freedom, secularism, and the rule of law."
He accused the railway police of acting in a biased manner and claimed the victims were handed over to a violent mob supported by Bajrang Dal and BJP members. "It has been revealed that police and railway police personnel acted with bias, fabricated evidence, coerced eyewitnesses, and surrendered the victims to a violent mob backed by Bajrang Dal and BJP elements. Officers meant to uphold the constitution instead behaved like ideological Swayam Sevaks, abandoning their sworn duty," the notice read.
Eden also criticised Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, saying his response was intended to protect those responsible. "The Chief Minister's dismissive response, aimed at shielding the culprits, further erodes public trust. Instead of restoring order, the state machinery seems to have been handed over to violent fringe elements," he said.
He added that the incident was not a one-off case but part of a wider pattern of targeting minorities. "This is not an isolated incident but a dangerous pattern targeting religious minorities and Dalit-tribal communities, threatening their access to education, health, and basic dignity. This House must treat the issue with the seriousness it deserves to ensure accountability and uphold constitutional values," Eden said.
Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha will continue its discussion on Operation Sindoor for the second day.
The Standing Committees on Communications and Information Technology will table their reports on the government's response to earlier recommendations. Reports from the Standing Committees on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Rural Development, and Panchayati Raj will also be presented.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to address the Lok Sabha between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm, according to a government source. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to speak later in the evening.
The Lok Sabha had started the discussion on Operation Sindoor on Monday afternoon. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opened the debate, describing it as "India's strong, successful, and decisive" response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The debate went on till around 1:00 am, with heated exchanges between opposition and ruling party leaders. (ANI)
